What I said yesterday was untrue.
I read it twice.
Then I handed the phone back.
“Thank you for correcting it.”
He waited.
I knew what he wanted next.
Relief. Forgiveness. A way to turn the page because he had finally written one truthful paragraph.
“I’m sorry,” he said.
“I heard you.”
“Do you hate me?”
I looked at his face, the familiar shape of it, the tiny scar near his eyebrow from the tree we had climbed at eight.
“No.”
His shoulders dropped.
Then I finished.
“But I don’t trust you.”
He sat down heavily.
“I didn’t think I could do it.”
“Be her father?”
He nodded.
“I kept thinking about everything we might lose.”
“Did you think about what she would lose?”
He covered his face.
For once, I let the silence remain.
After a while, he lowered his hands.
“What do I do now?”
“Stop asking us to make this easier for you. Speak honestly to the people involved. Get help. Respect Hannah’s decisions.”
“And Lily?”
I looked toward the corridor.
“That is a conversation you need to have through the right people, with her needs first.”
He swallowed.
“Can we ever be like we were?”
My throat tightened.
“I don’t know.”
It was the most honest thing I had said to him.
And the hardest.
The following days were filled with things too small for anyone outside the hospital to notice.
Hannah learning which questions to ask.
A nurse showing her something twice without making her feel foolish.
A better night.
A difficult morning.
A notebook slowly filling with instructions, names, and appointment dates.
Lily remained a baby through all of it.
She hiccupped.
She frowned in her sleep.
She objected loudly when something displeased her.
The first time Hannah laughed at that indignant little face, she looked startled by the sound.
“I think she has opinions,” she said.
“She comes from a family with plenty.”
Hannah smiled.
Then she touched her daughter’s cheek.
“She’s allowed.”
I went home before Lily did.
Walking into my house without the baby I had carried felt stranger than I expected.
My son met me at the door and wrapped both arms around my waist.
Gently.
Someone had reminded him to be gentle.
“Where’s Aunt Hannah?”
“With Lily.”
“Is she coming here?”
“When Lily is ready.”
He considered that.
Then he took my hand and led me to the spare bedroom.
Dad had made the bed.
Mom had cleared a drawer.
On the door, my son had taped a sheet of paper.
LILY AND HER MOM.
I stood there so long that he looked worried.
“Did I spell it wrong?”
“No, sweetheart.”
I bent and kissed the top of his head.
“You got it exactly right.”
When discharge day finally came, nobody pretended the future would be easy.
There were appointments to attend, instructions to follow, and questions still unanswered.
Hannah checked her list twice.
Then she checked it again.
“You can call if you need to,” the nurse reminded her.
“I probably will.”
“That’s what we’re here for.”
I carried Hannah’s bag while Dad brought the car around.
She carried Lily.
Outside, she stopped beneath the hospital entrance and looked down at her daughter.
For a moment, I thought she was going to cry.
Instead, she whispered, “Let’s go home.”
Lucas wasn’t there.
He and Hannah were communicating through their attorneys about the separation and arrangements concerning Lily.
The clinic’s review was still underway.
I had given my account and kept my copies.
None of those things had disappeared because we were leaving the hospital.
But that afternoon belonged to Lily.
At my house, my son opened the door before we reached the step.
“Welcome, baby cousin,” he announced.
Hannah laughed.
Then she saw the paper on the bedroom door.
Her face crumpled.
I set down the bag.
“What is it?”
She shook her head, unable to answer.
Finally, she pointed.
“Her mom.”
I looked at the words.
“That’s who you are.”
She nodded, pressing her lips together.
That evening, after my son had gone to bed, Hannah and I sat beside Lily.
The little wooden sign stood on the dresser.
For once, neither of our phones was ringing.
“Do you regret saying yes?” Hannah asked.
I watched Lily’s tiny mouth move in her sleep.
I thought about the injections, the exhaustion, the delivery.
I thought about my brother.
Then I looked at Hannah.
“I regret trusting him with things I should have kept in my own hands.”
She lowered her eyes.
“But I don’t regret her.”
Hannah reached across the space between us.
“Neither do I.”
For the first time since Lily’s birth, I thought we might sleep.
Then someone knocked on the front door.
Three quiet knocks.
Dad had already gone home.
Mom had texted that she was in bed.
I stood, suddenly alert.
Through the glass, I saw a young woman in a gray coat.
She held a large envelope against her chest.
I opened the door only partway.
“Can I help you?”
“Are you Lucas’s sister?”
“Yes.”
She glanced toward the street, then back at me.
“My name is Rachel. I worked at the fertility clinic when Hannah began treatment.”
My hand tightened on the door.
“If this is about my records, my attorney—”
“It isn’t about your records.”
Behind me, Hannah stepped into the hallway.
Rachel saw her and went pale.
For a moment, neither woman spoke.
Then Hannah whispered, “You were the coordinator.”
Rachel nodded.
“I tried to reach you after I left. Your husband said you didn’t want any further contact.”
Hannah moved closer.
“Contact about what?”
Rachel looked down at the envelope.
“Before you answer anything else,” Hannah said, “did he tell you I agreed to something?”
The woman’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Hannah went completely still.
Rachel held out the envelope.
“I think you need to see what he told us about you.”….

Click here to continue read PART 6: THE LETTER HANNAH NEVER RECEIVED

PART 4: THE LIE HE SENT TO EVERYONE My father’s message remained on the screen.
